RUSSI (Ravenna)
FIRA DI SETT DULUR
The "Sett dulur" is the main fair in Russi and the only one
witch involves peoples coming from the whole region. It has got religious
origins, byt during the centuries it developed mainly its civil and entertainment
aspects. The celebration of the Virgin of the Seven Sorrows dates back
to the settling of the Serviti Friars in Russi and to the consequent creation
of their brotherhood. According to the archives, the settling dates back
to the end of the 16th century, but the veneration of Our Lady of Sorrows
began later, namely with the pope Innocenzo III in 1688. However, according
to some documents, the first celebration of Our Lady of Sorrows in Russi
took place with a procession in 1671. Documents about the end of
the 17th and the beginning of the 18th centuries have not been found.
The first suce information about the celebration appear
in the annals of the brotherhood of the Seven Sorrows. From the end of
the 18th until the beginning of the 19th century, the celebration focused
more on the civil then on the religious aspect, so that interest for the
festivity grew not only in the village, but also in the surrounding area.
A small fair taking place during the days of the celebration was
a major factor in the growing of the popular partecipation.
In 1864, after the Unit of Italy, the new local Government
decided to abolish some religious festivities. Is kept, however, the festivity
of Our Lady of Sorrows wich had become, by the time, more commercial than
religious. Typical attractions of the celebration were fireworks, the Berber
horses race and the concert which took place Sunday in the central square
of Russi.
During the years, the local government focused its attention
more on the commercial aspect of the festivity which had become an attraction
for the whole Romagna.
In 1951 the name of the fair changed from fiera to sagra
to stress the civil nature of it. Celebrations lost part of their grandeur
in the period between World War I and World War II, although the fascism
tried to received it. In the Sixties the Pro Loco (the local tourisme office)
and the local government revived the popularity of the Fair of the Seven
Sorrows through a series of manifestations and shows. This fairs is popular
also for same characteristic dishes and wines such as "bel e cot" and "canena
nova". The "fira" takes place in the third week of september.
